Police investigating the death of a man on the A39 have said he was hit by a car after leaving an ambulance.

32 year old Andrew Scott Hamilton from Glasgow was being taken to North Devon District Hospital after he collapsed in Bideford town centre.

After he became agitated in the ambulance, it pulled into Holmacott layby so he could have a cigarette and calm down.

Police are still investigating how long there was between him leaving the ambulance and getting hit by the car.

The A39 was closed in both directions after the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police are asking for any witnesses to contact them on 08452 777444 and quote log 180 130610.
