The A36 outside Bath is closed from Monday (2nd March) until the middle of June to stabilise the road and correct ''geotechnical faults'' in the bank underneath.
A three-mile stretch of the route between the junction for Brassknocker Hill and Hantone Hill in Bathampton is affected, but the Highways Agency says businesses and residents will be still be able to gain access.
The project is costing around £2.3m.
Only certain vehicles under 7.5 tonnes will still be able to climb up Brassknocker Hill and use it as a diversion route. Other diversions will be signposted.
