Armed officers have been called to a village in our area this morning after reports from the public that a man with a gun had shut himself in a house.

The man had shot his own dogs, killing them both.

Police officers from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Firearms Support Unit went to a house in Cotton End Road in Wilstead in Bedford at around 7am and cordoned off the house.

According to Bedfordshire Police the man, who is in his 50s, had shot his own dogs, killing them both.

After a three hour negotiation he gave himself up to officers and is now in hospital where he is being checked over.
