Test Track Crash Kills Driver

A driver's died and four people have been injured in a crash Bedfordshire's Millbrook vehicle testing track.

The crash happened just after 11.30am on Tuesday 3 July 2012 at the Millbrook Proving Ground near the village of Marston Mortaine.

The man who died had been driving a car carrying four passengers when the crash happened. No other vehicle was involved.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passengers, three men and one woman, were taken to Bedford Hospital with various injuries, which were not life threatening.

Collision Investigation Officers from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit have carried out a full forensic examination of the scene and are being assisted by the Health and Safety Executive.

Colleagues from the East of England Ambulance Service and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the scene.

The family of the dead man, who is from Swindon, were informed of his death on Tuesday evening.

The crash happened just over two hours after a woman racing driver was seriously hurt in a crash during F1 car testing at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire.

Maria De Villota, 32, was taking part in her first test for the Marussia Formula One team when she crashed into a support truck.

The accident is said to have happened at low speed after Villota pulled off the track following a lap during which she reached speeds of about 200mph.
