Custody volunteers needed in the West

No-one should have to put up with abuse, poor accomedation and lack of food, even if they are locked up.

That is why our police need volunteers to carry out spot-checks on custody cells in Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil and Bristol.

They are after people to join their 'Independent Custody Visiting Scheme' to check on the welfare of people who have been arested.

Custody Visiting Development Officer Lorna Muffett said: ''Custody visiting provides impartial feedback on the way in which people in custody are treated. Entering custody facilities for the first time can be a very daunting experience for anyone. Our job is to ensure that those in custody are being treated fairly and are in suitable accommodation.

''We want to see a wide range of applicants from all corners of the community which gives the public even greater reassurance that we really do consider everyone’s viewpoint.''

Pairs of Independent Custody Visitors conduct all visits after attending nationally recognised training.

Applicants must be aged at least 18 and live or work in the Avon and Somerset area. Volunteers will receive expenses and full training is provided.
