Police are appealing for a potential witness to come forward as part of an ongoing investigation into a serious sexual assault in a Bristol park.

A 16-year-old girl was seriously sexually assaulted while in the Oldbury Court Estate on the evening of Wednesday 1 August 2012.

Investigating officer Det Con Maddie Fife said: ''This is a complex and sensitive inquiry and despite the incident happening in August 2012, it wasn't until last May that the victim felt able to give a full statement about what happened to her.

''Since May we have been gathering more information and progressing numerous lines of enquiry.

''We believe the victim spoke to an elderly man following the incident, close to the Goffenton Drive entrance to the park.

''We are very keen to trace this man, who is described as white with thinning/receding grey hair. He was short with a stooped appearance and used a walking stick.

''If this was you, or if you know anyone in the local area who matches this description, please call us as soon as possible.''

A 40-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (5/3) in connection with this incident. He has been released on bail until early June to allow further enquiries to take place.

If you can help, please call Det Con Maddie Fife, of the Operation Bluestone team, via the 24-hour Police Enquiry Centre on 101.
