Bristol stadium bid in limbo again

Work to build a brand new 30,000-seater stadium on land on the outskirts of Bristol will have to wait, while a High Court judge takes a fresh look at the case.

On Monday (20th February), the City Council said the first bid for a judicial review was over, when the sole unnamed person pushing for it, discontinued the case.

But now, another anonymous person has come forward to mount a fresh challenge.

Reacting in a statement to Heart, a Bristol City Council spokesman said:

"Clearly this astonishing turn of events is deeply frustrating.

"Our legal representatives were not invited to be present, or even made aware, that the courts were due to make this decision [on Wednesday] on a new judicial review by another anonymous person."

Campaigners against the proposed stadium at Ashton Vale have always wanted the land declared as a town green.

But last year, the City Council said that developers for Bristol City Football Club would only build on part of it, protecting the rest.

The City Council spokesman added:

"We shall be seeking to reverse this decision in the strongest terms next week, when it is reviewed by the courts."
