Cleeve Abbey

In the small village of Washford, Somerset, lies the well preserved Cistercian Cleeve Abbey.

Now looked after by English Heritage, the remains of the 12th Century building is a step back in time to how the 'White Monks' lived.

You can catch a glimpse of monastic life 800 years ago whilst walking through the Gatehouse, the refectory, the library and the remarkably intact 13th century heraldic tiles.

You really picture what life was like as a monk, how they slept, ate and worshiped.

The Abbey Church was destroyed by Henry VIII during in the 1530's, however, you can still see the foundations.

If you fancy a cultural day out, then Cleeve Abbey is something to see.
