Police officers stopped one cyclist every six minutes during an operation to combat cycle crime in Cambridge last week.

Officers stood on Sydney Street for around two hours on Thursday afternoon.

In total, the stopped more than 20 cyclists.

They handed out fixed penalty notices to cyclists for riding in a no-cycling zone and for going the wrong way in a one-way system.

PC Katie Norman said: "Many cyclists ignore the no entry signs in Sydney Street and many feel it is fine for them to continue cycling.

We wanted to remind cyclists they were breaking the law and issued them with a £30 fine.

We also took this opportunity to carry out checks for stolen cycles and educate cyclists about immobilise and general cycle crime prevention advice."
