Controlled explosions are being carried out at RAF Lakenheath after some unstable dynamite was found.

It was found during a routine safety inspection at the US Air Force base earlier today (Tuesday).

Dynamite is used during training exercises at the base.

However, some unstable batches of the explosive which had started to decompose was found.

A cordon was put up while controlled explosions are being carried out to destroy the dynamite.

These controlled detonations may continue into tomorrow morning and possibly tomorrow afternoon.

A spokesperson from RAF Lakenheath said: "Residents in the local community may hear occasional noises during these periods.

There is no risk to base personnel or the local community."
