A road in Haverhill has been closed after reports that power lines, damaged by a falling tree, were 'sparking'.

Onlookers said flames and sparks were coming from cables on Withersfield Road, at the corner with Broad Street, at around 10am today (Friday).

Police and firefighters were called to the scene [pictured - above right].

Engineers from UK Power Networks are at the scene.

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: "UK Power Networks engineers are working as quickly as safely possible to replace a section of overhead lines in Withersfield Road, Haverhill after a tree came down onto the lines in the bad weather, causing sparking which welded the cables together.

No customer supplies are affected by the incident.."
