Anti-Social Behaviour Tackled In Peterborough
Anti-social behaviour including littering, spitting and begging will be tackled during a day of action event in Peterborough city centre.
The initiative on Monday 10 August 2015 will also focus on stopping those who ignore the Bridge Street cycling ban.
Councillor John Holdich, the leader of Peterborough City Council, said: "A huge amount of time and money has been invested in improving the city centre, particularly in Long Causeway, Cathedral Square and Bridge Street. A similar amount of effort is put in to keeping it clean.
"However, all this excellent work is sometimes undone by anti-social individuals who choose to spit on the ground or drop litter. I receive numerous letters and emails each week from residents who notice the same thing.
"Therefore, I am very pleased to see this first day of action taking place and that we are also working to get additional enforcement powers for council officers to tackle all types of anti-social behaviour in the city centre.
"By continuing to make an example of this type of behaviour, I hope to see a reduction in such incidences so the city centre remains the attractive, safe area we have worked so hard for it to be."
Earlier this year the council extended the restriction on Bridge Street so that cycling is not allowed between 9am and 6pm on any day of the week to protect pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists caught cycling during these periods could face a fine of £30.
The council also enforced its first fixed penalty notice for spitting at the end of last year. The offender was caught spitting in Long Causeway and he was found guilty of littering at Peterborough Magistrates' Court, and fined £200, ordered to pay costs of £100 and a victim surcharge of £20.
