Cambridge To Be Spotless Ahead Of Big Match

Cambridge City Council has made plans to ensure the city is as clean and tidy as possible before, during and after the big showcase football match that will see Premiership superstars Manchester United visit the city to play Cambridge United.

In the run-up to the FA Cup fourth round match, which is set for 23 January, the council will sweep streets in the direct vicinity of the R Costings Abbey stadium on Newmarket Road.

The main routes from the city centre and train station will also be swept and there will be a deep clean of Maids Causeway underpass and power-washing of the footpaths on Coldham’s Common.

Litter picking will also be under way in the streets in the vicinity of the stadium and main routes from the city centre and train station.

During the match itself council teams will be out on streets picking up litter and emptying bins.

All surrounding streets will be revisited on Saturday after the match to check that any remaining litter is removed, bins emptied and any spillages on footpaths cleaned up.

Cllr Peter Roberts, Executive Councillor for Environment, Waste and Public Health, said: "This match is a major event for Cambridge United and for the city and that is why we are putting our street cleansing teams to work in those areas around the stadium.

"They will be working hard in the run-up to, and on the day of the match, to keep the city looking neat and tidy and we will be doing follow-up checks after the match itself."
