FBU says reduced numbers are leading to slower response times
Peterborough Man Jailed For Trying To Murder Former Friend
A man has been jailed for 12 years for trying to murder a former friend in a Peterborough street.
Antonio Conceitao, 33, had been friends with fellow East Timor national Francisco Dos Santos, 32, for several years and they had even worked together as warehouse operatives at a distribution centre.
But a dispute between their families soured their relationship and at about 10.45am on August 15 last year they argued over the phone.
Fifteen minutes later Mr Dos Santos turned up at the home of multiple occupancy where Conceitao lived in Cobden Avenue.
He shouted for Conceitao to come out, which he did, armed with two large kitchen knives.
Mr Dos Santos asked him to drop the knives and fight but he refused and the victim picked up a piece of broken wooden pallet to defend himself.
Conceitao approached and stabbed him twice, in the shoulder and the upper arm, the former puncturing a lung and cutting a vein.
Dos Santos also struck Conceitao in the face with the wood and they parted, Dos Santos bleeding heavily.
Dos Santos was taken to Peterborough City Hospital before being transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge in a life-threatening condition.
He has now recovered but still has reduced use of his arm.
Conceitao was arrested but made no comment in police interview.
On Monday (February 16), he was found guilty of attempted murder at Cambridge Crown Court and jailed.
Detective Constable Nina Bartlett, who investigated, said: "We do not fully know what the telephone conversation was about but it caused the victim to confront Conceitao outside his home.
"Conceitao's response was grossly disproportionate and the violence he used could easily have killed Mr Dos Santos.
"It is appalling that such violence was used on a Peterborough street and the sentence handed down reflects the severity of the crime."
