Peterborough's First All Electric Taxi
2 July 2015, 17:17
The next time you hire a taxi in Peterborough - you might not hear it waiting outside... it could be silent!
It's because a zero-emission electric vehicle has been licenced for the first time, to operate as part of Peterborough's private hire fleet.
The city's first ever electric private hire is now picking up passengers after being granted a licence.
The car, a Nissan Leaf, can travel around 110 miles before it needs recharging and will be able to utilize a number of electric charging points around the city. As well as being more environmentally friendly, it also cuts fuel costs.
If the two month trial proves a success, the operator hopes to permanently introduce one of the vehicles into his fleet.
Donna Hall, the city council's public protection manager said:
"This is a great opportunity for the city and I hope further taxi and private hire providers look to broaden their fleet with electric cars."
Councillor Nigel North, cabinet member for environment capital and communities, said:
"This decision demonstrates our aspiration to become the UK's environment capital as well as our commitment to reduce carbon emissions in the city. We have a number of charging points in the city so I hope this is the first of many electric private hire vehicles on our roads picking up fares."
