Firefighters are still tackling a large fire in a derelict building in Colchester.

They were called just after midnight to Roman Circus Walk to a former stable block which was being converted.

People from 30 nearby homes have been evacuated.

Crews were called in from Colchester, West Mersea, Tiptree, Coggeshall and Tollesbury.

Assistant Divisional Officer Paul Gardner said: "When we arrived we were faced with a well developed fire raging in the ground floor of the building. Crews have done an excellent job in getting on top of the fire. Using the Aerial Ladder Platform to get water on the fire from above we have managed to stop it half way along the ground floor and it looks like we have the fire surrounded now. There is still a lot of work to do and crews are tackling the fire on multiple fronts."

As of 02.50 this morning the fire service were saying that steady progress is being made as crews remain on the scene fighting the fire.
