They Say It'll Be Over By Christmas

Location of event: Brighton Toy and Model Museum
Time of event: 7.30pm
Date of event: 22/11/2014

Event details: A view of the First World War from some local people who fought in it. To remember the sacrifice of the local men who fought on the front and the women who had to watch them go, knowing that they may never see them again, Brighton Toy and Model Museum will be holding an event focusing on the very personal experience of those who went, those who never came back, and the ones they left behind. It was a Tommy from Brighton who pulled the trigger on the first British shot fired in anger. On 22nd of August 1914 a German officer was unhorsed by Pte Ernest Edward Thomas, a 4th Dragoon Guard who lived on Southdown Avenue. After experiencing several adventures, the decorated and Promoted Sgt Thomas survived the war and died 25 years later, still living in Brighton, on the eve of the Second World War. Fascinating details like these, the letters shared between those at the front and their wives and sweethearts at home in Brighton And Hove, even songs written by the girls of the local munitions factory: Light and Co of Circus Street will be recited, affording an insight into the attitudes of all those involved in the war effort, both at home and facing the enemy. The Pavilion as a Hospital. Recognition will also be made to those who came from the furthest reaches of the Empire to fight for King and Country and, once wounded, found themselves recovering in The Royal Pavilion. Letters from officers and other ranks recruited in India describe the reception they received from the people of Sussex, especially girls, cheering their arrival and inviting them into their homes for comfort. The evening’s schedule remembering the efforts of those from Sussex will start at 7.30pm in the Museum. Admission costs £8.00, 50% of the ticket proceeds will go to veterans’ charity, Combat Stress, a UK charity supporting service personnel and their families who are suffering from depression, stress and other trauma related mental health issues. Tickets are available on the door or by booking in advance here.

Event details: A special ‘Celebrity Dinner and Auction’ evening event is being organised by the staff and young people of Achieving Together, part of Fostering Together Ltd.  Achieving Together operate a residential home for young people who, for many reasons, are unable to live with their birth families. The young people asked the staff if they could “do something for children less fortunate than themselves”.  Nicky Young from Fostering Together Ltd said, “We felt this was quite special, as our young people are so often labelled and seen as negative people who are not part of a community – hoodies or thugs – trouble makers. “We spoke with them and suggested Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.  The staff explained what this was, and about the work they carry out. Everyone agreed this was to be the recipient charity.” Achieving Together then signed up for the Chestnut Tree House £50 Challenge, with thoughts of a small auction in a local church hall.  The £50 Challenge encourages supporters to take £50 to organise a fundraising activity and see how much money they can raise.  Since this initial thought, the event has grown, and now boasts the support of BBC’s celebrity auctioneer Jonathan Pratt from Bargain Hunt, who has been involved in the planning and will be hosting the evening. Nicky continued, “We have had amazing support from the local community and businesses, with so many businesses supporting us by donating their time and services to bring the event together, as well as some fantastic lots to be auctioned.  Live Music will be provided by Elesha Paul Moses (X Factor and The Voice artiste), there will be mystery and magic from magician Tony Charles and Toastmaster, Robert Hopkins will be keeping the guests entertained and informed throughout the evening.” As part of the £50 Challenge, the young people and staff will also be completing a 26 mile challenge, to be held at Henfield Leisure Centre on 30 October 2014, 1 – 5pm, where the young people and staff will aim to complete 26 miles on rowing machines, cycles, treadmills and cross trainers.  Alongside this there will be a raffle and cake sale. The dinner and auction is being sponsored by IJ Care of Brighton, a recruitment agency specialising in staff working in the care sector. Stunning venue, Long Furlong Barn, has kindly allowed Achieving Together to use their idyllic venue and DH Catering will be preparing and serving a fabulous three course meal, with Jigsaw Catering providing the bars and welcome drinks.

Ghost Stories for Christmas

Location of event: Brighton Royal Pavilion
Time of event: 7.00pm - 10.30pm
Date of event: 6 December 2014

Event details: Have yourself a scary little Christmas.
The second annual Brighton "Ghost Stories for Christmas" charity fundraiser will be performed at Brighton Pavilion on Saturday 6th December 2014 in aid of RISE, a domestic abuse charity working in Brighton, Hove and West Sussex. Mention the words ‘Christmas ghost story’, and most people will automatically think of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. But the practice of gathering around the fire at Christmastime to tell ghost stories was a popular Christmas tradition long before Dickens put pen to paper. In fact the telling of ghost stories was once as much a part of Christmas as the turkey and Christmas tree is to us now. In December 2014 Blind Piper Productions will be reviving this tradition at Brighton Royal Pavilion with an evening of mulled cider and performances of classic ghost stories by MR James, E.F. Benson and Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. In 2013 the first Brighton Ghost Stories for Christmas raised £233 for The Clocktower Sanctuary. This year we aim to raise in excess of £1000 and proceeds from the event will be donated to RISE (http://www.riseuk.org.uk/), a domestic abuse charity which provides help with refuge accommodation, resettlement, crisis appointments, helpline, counselling, housing, legal and financial advice, solicitors appointments, support groups, play therapy, 1-to-1 support and training and preventative education. This event has been kindly sponsored Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. Ticket price includes a glass of mulled cider on arrival and entry into a prize draw, with prizes donated by Indian Summer, The Duke of York's Cinema, Sussex County Cricket Club, Choccywoccydoodah, Southern Rail, Helen Joubert Design and more. So pull up a chair, gather closer in the candlelight and welcome in the season with a dose of Christmas Spirits. Tickets: £20/£15 (cons) available from brownpaper tickets.com: http://ghoststoriesforchristmas.bpt.me/

Gary Williams has performed as a soloist with leading big bands and concert orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony, the BBC Big Band, Ireland's RTE and the Lahti Sinfonia Finland. He toured the UK in The Legend of Sinatra and in a tribute to the music of Fred Astaire, which was presented by his daughter Ava. His recent album paying tribute to Sinatra was Jazz FM's Album of the Week and has been released in Japan. His "Best of" CD (featuring highlights of his Abbey Road recordings) prompted Oscar winning lyricist Don Black to say, "In a world of Pop Idol mediocrity Gary Williams shines like a dazzling beacon" "Not only is he a brilliant singer; he also puts the audience at ease. A lot of artists are not good at being themselves when not singing - Gary is as relaxed chatting as he is singing, and he's funny too. Don't miss him."
