An Inspector Calls

Time of event: 8pm
Date of event: 30/10/14 - 01/11/14
Event details: Looking for something different to do over the Halloween weekend? The Copthorne Players are staging an ambitious interpretation of J.B. Preistley’s gripping detective thriller, ‘An Inspector Calls’ at the Copthorne Village Hall, Thursday 30th October to Saturday 1st December. The prosperous Birling family’s comfortable lives are disrupted when, one evening, they are visted by a mysterious inspector who forces them all to examine their previously comfortable existence. Regarded as one of the classics of mid-20th-century theatre, ‘An Inspector Calls’ is currently a prescribed GCSE text. Director Christine Dale has decided to take the play off the stage, and into the round, allowing you to join the Birling’s in their dining room as they are interrogated by their mysterious visitor. Mike McMahon, who plays the eponymous Inspector, said, "This is a powerful play. It's stayed with me ever since reading it at school as a teenager so, when the opportunity arose to be the voice of Priestley’s anger at social injustice, I leapt at the chance.
The play was first performed in 1946, when the issues it raises about shared responsibility would have resonated with audiences who had endured war together and were witnessing the birth of the NHS. But its central theme, that comfortable lives are not lived without consequence, remains entirely relevant to us today. In a time when the news is too often filled with news of workers exploited to hold down costs or corrupt regimes supported to ensure the flow of oil, the play invites us to examine the price that others may pay for our affluence and to consider the effect of our actions on the lives invisibly intertwined with ours by a global economy."
Tickets are available from 01342 713139 and cost £8 on Thursday 30th October, £10 Friday and Saturday performances. The Copthorne Players are always looking for people to join them on stage and off. Our next show will be a musical theatre extravaganza at the Chequer Mead Theatre. If you would like to join us you can find more information at www.copthorneplayers.co.uk

Ghost Stories for Christmas
Location of event: Brighton Royal Pavilion
Time of event: 7.00pm - 10.30pm
Date of event: 6 December 2014
Event details: Have yourself a scary little Christmas.
The second annual Brighton "Ghost Stories for Christmas" charity fundraiser will be performed at Brighton Pavilion on Saturday 6th December 2014 in aid of RISE, a domestic abuse charity working in Brighton, Hove and West Sussex. Mention the words ‘Christmas ghost story’, and most people will automatically think of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. But the practice of gathering around the fire at Christmastime to tell ghost stories was a popular Christmas tradition long before Dickens put pen to paper. In fact the telling of ghost stories was once as much a part of Christmas as the turkey and Christmas tree is to us now. In December 2014 Blind Piper Productions will be reviving this tradition at Brighton Royal Pavilion with an evening of mulled cider and performances of classic ghost stories by MR James, E.F. Benson and Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. In 2013 the first Brighton Ghost Stories for Christmas raised £233 for The Clocktower Sanctuary. This year we aim to raise in excess of £1000 and proceeds from the event will be donated to RISE (http://www.riseuk.org.uk/
), a domestic abuse charity which provides help with refuge accommodation, resettlement, crisis appointments, helpline, counselling, housing, legal and financial advice, solicitors appointments, support groups, play therapy, 1-to-1 support and training and preventative education. This event has been kindly sponsored Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. Ticket price includes a glass of mulled cider on arrival and entry into a prize draw, with prizes donated by Indian Summer, The Duke of York's Cinema, Sussex County Cricket Club, Choccywoccydoodah, Southern Rail, Helen Joubert Design and more. So pull up a chair, gather closer in the candlelight and welcome in the season with a dose of Christmas Spirits. Tickets: £20/£15 (cons) available from brownpaper tickets.com: http://ghoststoriesforchristmas.bpt.me/

A performance packed with the all-time holiday classics including Let It Snow, White Christmas, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and many more. Special guest stars The Patriot Girls bring a touch of glamour, tight choreography and tight vocal harmonies to a sprinkling of Christmas classics including Santa Baby and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Lord Jeffrey Archer described the girls as “bloody marvellous” after a special Olympic Ball and Bob Hope's daughter, Linda, told them, “Bob would have adored you! You were incredible”. Local talent Nia Coleman also makes her debut with the The Len Phillips Big Band bringing her own touch of holiday magic to this very special show. Gary Williams has performed as a soloist with leading big bands and concert orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony, the BBC Big Band, Ireland's RTE and the Lahti Sinfonia Finland. He toured the UK in The Legend of Sinatra and in a tribute to the music of Fred Astaire, which was presented by his daughter Ava. His recent album paying tribute to Sinatra was Jazz FM's Album of the Week and has been released in Japan. His "Best of" CD (featuring highlights of his Abbey Road recordings) prompted Oscar winning lyricist Don Black to say, "In a world of Pop Idol mediocrity Gary Williams shines like a dazzling beacon" "Not only is he a brilliant singer; he also puts the audience at ease. A lot of artists are not good at being themselves when not singing - Gary is as relaxed chatting as he is singing, and he's funny too. Don't miss him."
