4 Of UK's Best Beaches Are On South Coast
Bournemouth, Weymouth and Swanage come up trumps in TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Beach awards.
St Ives in Cornwall was voted the top UK beach resort and also made it into the top 10 of best European beach destinations.
The Cornish resort boasts several beaches and some of the top-ranked hotels and B&Bs, said TripAdvisor.
Newquay in Cornwall was in second place in the British list, with Bournemouth third, Weymouth in Dorset fourth and the Welsh resort of Tenby in Pembrokeshire fifth.
Top European beach destination was Ayia Napa in Cyprus, with Skiathos in Greece second, Protaras in Cyprus third and Mykonos in Greece fourth. St Ives was in sixth place in the European list.
“These awards recognise the best beach destinations as decided by millions of Tripadvisor travellers,” commented Emma O’Boyle, TripAdvisor spokesperson.
“With so much beautiful coastline in the UK, it is an impressive achievement that Dorset alone is home to three of Britain’s best beach destinations.”
The Travellers’ Choice Beaches award winners were determined based on the most highly rated beach destinations by travellers in TripAdvisor reviews.
“Millions of travellers have spoken and all three winning beach destinations in Dorset should feel very proud ,” continued TripAdvisor’s Emma O’Boyle. “It’s also great news for Weymouth as the area build sup to the excitement of hosting the Olympic sailing events next year.”
Matt Ryan, Outdoor Leisure Manager at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said:
“Weymouth’s golden sands and glorious weather have been attracting visitors to the area for generations. Weymouth’s famous Victorian esplanade is currently the focus of significant regeneration by the Council, as the Borough prepares to host the sailing events for the 2012 Games.
“Last year, Weymouth was recognised by TripAdvisor as the 4th best up and coming holiday destination in the world, so it is fantastic news that we have now also been recognised in the Traveller’s Choice Beach awards.”
