New Leader of Bournemouth Council Announced

Bournemouth Council has confirmed Councillor John Beesley as the new Leader of the Council.

Following the recommendation of the Council’s Nominations Board, the appointment of Councillor John Beesley was made at the special meeting of the Council called to consider the budget.

He takes over from Councillor Peter Charon, who stepped down after getting a vote on no confidence last month.

Councillor Beesley will announce his Deputy Leader and Cabinet Members at the next Full Council meeting on 28 February 2012.

On his appointment as the new Leader, Councillor Beesley, said: “It is a great privilege to have been appointed Leader of Bournemouth Council and I shall do my utmost to fulfil the confidence entrusted to me by colleagues.

“I believe that it is important to residents that we continue to ensure the level of services provided by the Council is maintained and to improve them where possible. We will strive to make further efficiencies and continue to deliver true value for money for council tax payers. This will enable the Council to invest more in the services that residents have told us are important to them.

“The Council delivers a very wide range of services through an extremely dedicated team of officers and I would like to thank all Council staff for their hard work and enthusiasm during these generally austere times for the public services. Here in Bournemouth, I know that they will continue to rise to the challenge and residents can look forward to the continuation of prudently managed Council finances and no cuts to front line services.”
