A drunk driver from Wareham has been jailed for three and a half years, after he left a motorcyclist paralysed in a hit and run.

David Whittaker admitted hitting the biker on Sandford Road last October and not stopping.

When police caught up with him half an hour later he was found to be twice the legal limit, and had been disqualified from driving.

Sergeant Tony Burden, from the Traffic Unit, said: "This was an horrific road traffic collision which left a man with dreadful injuries. The impact of these are life changing and will affect him and his family for the rest of his life.

"To reflect the seriousness of the collision David Whittaker was sentenced for the charge of Grievous Bodily Harm.

"This incident shows the devastating effects drink driving can have and why it is so important that we detect those offences that contribute to collisions.

"With the year long ‘no excuse’ Dorset Road Safe initiative we have been, and still are, aiming to change drivers’ behaviour with a combination of enforcement and education to make Dorset’s roads safer not just for this year but permanently."
