A man has been jailed for six years for seriously sexually assaulting a woman in Bournemouth gardens last summer.

Rasuljon Kuchkarov – a 22-year-old man who was born in Uzbekistan but who is staying in Bournemouth – pleaded guilty on Friday, 30 October 2009 to the rape of a 26-year-old woman from Southbourne.

It happened around 2am on Sunday, 12 July 2009, when the woman was on her way home from a fancy dress party. He was caught after being captured on CCTV following her.

Detective Sergeant Lindsay Brake, of Bournemouth & Poole CID, the officer in case, said: "This was a very serious, and thankfully uncommon, attack on a woman making her way home alone after an evening out with friends.

"The excellent quality of the town centre CCTV along with the co-operation of local retailers led us to identifying the man responsible.

"It should be recognised that this conviction would not have been possible without the courage shown by the victim and the hard work of everyone involved in the investigation.

"I hope that this man’s conviction reassures victims of sexual crime to have the confidence in reporting incidents of this nature to Dorset Police so that these offenders can be brought to justice."
