Robert Walter Blog - 3rd October 2013
Parliament was quickly back in full swing following the summer recess after an early recall for the urgent debate on Syria.
And there were important discussions to be had on the pros and cons of shale gas extraction, the commencement of pilot badger culls in nearby Somerset and concerns over the impact of the Transparency and Lobby Bill.
Here in North Dorset it was no less busy, with new industrial wind and solar farm proposals on the table; a county-wide consultation on rural bus services in Dorset; and the refurbishment of the main post offices in Shaftesbury and Blandford, which I look forward to officially cutting the red ribbon on next month.
I also met with the new Leader of Dorset County Council, Cllr Spencer Flower, and visited the Royal Lodge Retirement Home in Gillingham, which offers safe and secure independent living accommodation to elderly people.
Sadly this summer’s excellent weather didn’t extend to September’s 2013 Waterloo Show and Military Fair at Wimborne St Giles, which I was delighted to attend as a show Patron.
However, in typical British style and with military zeal, the event carried on regardless, raising much needed funds for bereaved military families who have lost their loved ones, with proceeds being distributed amongst charities like the Soldiers Charity (ABF), Caring for Courage, Scotties Little Soldiers, Combat Stress, SSAFA and the Defence Medical Welfare Service. It was a great day and I very much hope it will become an annual fixture.
