Bob Walter Blog - December 2013

The cold weather may have started to bite, but November saw Westminster abound with hot topics from energy prices and EU immigration, to Dorset’s own Navitus Bay Wind Farm proposal – all of which have proven to be controversial.

My own month in North Dorset began with the re-opening of two newly refurbished post office branches in Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury and a lively meeting with members of Transition Town Sturminster Newton to talk about renewable energy development in the county and across the UK.

Each year in November I also attend events in my constituency to mark Remembrance Sunday and this year was no exception. It is always an honour to be invited to lay commemorative wreaths on this special day alongside North Dorset’s Royal British Legion members.

Meanwhile, in Parliament, I presented a petition signed by local residents supporting the aims of the Rural Fair Share campaign. Due to an historic discrepancy, urban local authorities receive government grants 50 per cent higher per person than those in the countryside. My colleagues and I on the All Party Rural Services Group are backing this call for a more level playing field and will continue to lobby for greater parity.

As we begin the countdown to Christmas, the Chancellor will be issuing his Autumn Statement and I will be making early morning visits to Royal Mail sorting offices as our postmen and women make the final push to ensure all of our thousands of letters and parcels get to their destinations on time.
