Body of Stevenage aid worker back home

The family of aid worker Dr Karen Woo say the reaction from the British public has been overwhelming and generous.

The 36 year old was killed earlier this month when a party of aid workers was ambushed by militants.

The Foreign Office has confirmed that her body was repatriated yesterday afternoon - saying their thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

She died alongside nine of her colleagues and Karen's family has also paid tribute to them, saying: "While Karen was the only UK national involved in this incident, she was part of a team of brave and selfless people who were determined to make a difference, and the sacrifice of the whole group and their families should be recognised. Our sincere condolences go out to those families and friends of the other victims, who we are sure have been as deeply affected as us.

Karen’s body arrived back in the UK yesterday from Kabul, landing at Heathrow airport at 2pm. We would like to thank British Airways for their help. We now ask to be given privacy and space to grieve in peace while we undergo formalities and make the necessary arrangements. Karen’s funeral will be a private affair for family and friends and we would be extremely grateful if this could be respected.”
