Police have started an investigation after a stable yard fire in Hertfordshire in which four horses died.

Hertfordshire's police think the fire started during an attempted burglary at the site at Bennington Road, Walkern near Stevenage at around 1.50am on Wednesday 3 October 2012.

Police think offenders were trying to gain access to a metal container next to the stables, which contained a quad bike, and the fire started at some point during this process.

Inspector Chris Hunt said: "This is a very distressing incident and we are currently working with the fire service to establish the exact cause of the fire,. A full police investigation is also underway.

"Although the stables are in a remote location we are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious to contact us immediately, or anyone who may information which will help this investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hertfordshire Constabulary on the non-emergency number 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
