M1 northbound chaos

Thousands of drivers had to find ways of keeping themselves entertained on the M1 today - including a spot of football - after a serious crash caused huge tailbacks.

For the second time in two days there was an accident on the northbound stretch in the roadworks area.

This time three lorries and three cars collided between junctions 13 [Bedford] and 12 [Flitwick].

The East of England Ambulance Service say three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries as a result of the collision.

At one point the tailbacks were around 17 miles back to junction 9 and it was taking over two and a half hours to get through the queues.  With two lanes closed, but the motorway effectively at a standstill, many drivers got out of their vehicles to take a break - with some even getting in a bit of football practice.
