Teenage Girl Assaulted In Car Park

Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a report of an incident in Stevenage yesterday (Sunday June 19).

The incident is believed to have occurred in the car park at Fairlands Valley, just off Fairlands Way at 3pm. It is alleged a man approached a 15 year old girl, offered her money and has then touched her inappropriately.

The man was described as Asian, aged in his late 30s to early 40s, 5ft 7ins tall, with a medium build and stubble on his face. He was wearing a light grey hooded jumper, a red shirt under his jumper and a pair of jeans.

DC Hayden Coggins is investigating and said: “This is quite an unusual incident and we are obviously very keen to speak to this man. I am asking for the public’s help in tracing him.
 
“If you were in the area at that time and believe you saw this man or the incident take place, or if you believed you know a man matching this description, please get in contact.

“If you can help, please call police via the non emergency number on 0845 33 00 222, quoting crime reference E1/11/4254. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
 
Police have released the following advice:

  • Stick to busy and well-lit areas
  • Avoid short cuts through quiet, unlit, secluded or wooded areas and alleyways
  • Try to keep with friends rather than walk alone
  • Stay alert
  • Don’t use iPods or personal stereo headphones whilst walking or jogging because you may not be able to hear someone approaching
  • Never accept lifts from strangers
  • Make sure someone knows where you are going and tell them when you’ve arrived
  • If you think someone is following you, go to the nearest busy place, such as a petrol station.
  • Take a mobile phone with you if you have one.
