A number of homes in Felixstowe have been evacuated after a house fire there sparked concerns over a potential gas explosion.

Fire crews were called to Adastral Close just before 3.45am and, after arriving at the scene, reported a fire affecting a house and external gas supply.

As a precaution, properties on either side of the house were evacuated due to leaking gas and the risk of an explosion.

National Grid gas engineers were then alled out to cap the leaking gas so firefighters could extinguish the fire and make the area safe.

Crews had left the area and handed the incident over to the National Grid by 6am.
