Beware Of Scam Council Tax Calls

People in Tendring are being warned about a scam where they're offered a Council Tax refund for being a good payer.

A resident was contacted by phone and told to give over his bank details to get the money transferred to his account.

The Council was told about similar calls last summer and in December but this is the first report it has received this year.

Fortunately the resident was not taken in by the caller and refused to give out the information.

Nigel Borley, TDC's Principal Revenues Manager, said the man did exactly the right thing.

"He was told he was due some money back for being a good Council tax payer," he said.

"The resident said that he did not pay Council Tax and he is on benefits but the caller persisted and said it was due as he had paid in the past.

"We want to make it very clear this is a scam and the Council would never ring anyone asking for their bank details over the telephone."

Mr Borley said that anyone getting a similar call should contact the Council on 01255 686822.
