A man has been arrested by detectives investigating a fight outside a nightclub which left a footballer paralysed.

Goalkeeper Nicky Morgan, who played for Ryman League side Billericay Town, suffered a serious neck injury after intervening in a 10-man brawl outside the Sugar Hut in Brentwood, Essex, on October 28.

Essex Police said today that a 33-year-old man, from Sittingbourne, Kent, had been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He is been released on police bail until February.

Morgan is believed to have been injured as he tried to break up the fight outside the club, which regularly features in the television show The Only Way Is Essex.

A police spokesman said: "He is still in Queen's Hospital, Romford, but is expecting to be transferred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital for rehabilitation later today.''
