Chelmsford: Footballer Reports To Police

Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has been bailed to appear at court next month to answer speeding allegations.

A warrant for the 30-year-old's arrest had been issued after he failed to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court to face the charges.

However, the South Africa international's lawyer insists his client, who made a last-minute loan move to former club Everton from Tottenham on transfer deadline day in January, was not aware there were proceedings against him.

"Steven has moved swiftly to resolve this misunderstanding," said Gwynn Lewis in a statement.

"He responded immediately to the warrant and made a pre-arranged visit to a police station in Cheshire today and was subsequently given unconditional bail to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates Court next month.

"Mr Pienaar was totally unaware of the court date due to moving to Merseyside in February - the correspondence from the court had been sent to his old address in Essex."

Pienaar, whose address was given in court as Theydon Road, Epping, was charged with failing to disclose who was driving his Aston Martin DBS after it was caught speeding twice on Lambourne Road, Chigwell, on two separate days in October last year.

The allegations were proven in his absence and a judge ordered Pienaar be bailed to a later date for sentencing.
