Chelmsford: Lib Dems Defeat Challengers

The Liberal Democrats were celebrating today after holding on to two seats in the latest council by-elections.

Stephen Robinson, who fought Chelmsford constituency for the party at the 2010 General Election, polled 1,614 votes to win the Chelmsford North seat on Essex County Council.

The party also comfortably saw off the Tory challenge in the tussle for the Patching Hall seat on Chelmsford Borough Council.

Both vacancies were caused by the death of county council opposition leader Tom Smith-Hughes.
