Commuters are most chivalrous in Chelmsford but grumpiest in Gloucester, according to a poll.
Chelmsford was the top town for travellers prepared to give up a seat for those most in need (86%), the survey from social network Badoo found.
In contrast, Gloucester was the worst for chivalry, with 23% saying they were unwilling to offer their seat to anyone.
Of the 2,000 people polled, 56% said they regularly smiled at strangers on the way to work and nearly 44% had struck up a conversation with fellow passengers.
The friendliest commuters were those from Cardiff, followed by Southampton, Aberdeen, Wolverhampton and Oxford.
Worcester was the best commuter area for travellers swapping numbers and becoming friends, while the top spot for finding romance was Coventry.
The survey also found that 42% of travellers nationwide stuck their earphones on or read books or newspapers while on their journeys.
Londoner travellers (48%) were the most likely to avoid contact with other commuters.
