John Partridge, the former EastEnders actor and star of musical A Chorus Line, is supporting the Alzheimer's Society.

The actor has visited Epping Forest to officially launch the charity's Memory Walk which takes place there on September 15.

John, who played personal trainer Christian Clarke in the soap, has personal experience of dementia and wants to get people signed up for the walk.

He said: "My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2011 so I am getting to experience first-hand the daily challenges faced by those living with the disease and those around them.

"The day will be a brilliant family day out, whether four years old or 80 it's an event that everyone can take part in. There's no registration fee, it's just a great way to raise money to support those living with dementia and their carers."

Norman Crews, a keen walker from Loughton, will be taking part in the Epping Forest walk with his wife Louvain to say thank you for the support they have received from the charity.

Norman, 63, has vascular dementia and attends the weekly early onset support group in Epping and Harlow as well as a regular memory cafe.

Since being diagnosed five years ago the couple have turned to Alzheimer's Society for help and guidance.

Louvain said: "We have been very grateful for the support the society has shown us, it's a real helping hand, always giving clear and expert information. It's very comforting to know there's always someone there you can turn to for advice and support, it means we don't feel so alone.

"Norman loves going to the groups and we both love walking, so taking part in the event seemed like the obvious choice."

Memory Walk is the Alzheimer's Society's flagship fundraising event. Walks take place around the UK and last year more than £1 million was raised.

Marion Howell, services support manager in Essex, said: "Memory Walk is a really important fundraising event; it allows us to support people living with dementia and their carers, as well as fund vital research into treatments and a potential cure.

"Every year the event has got bigger and better and it really helps the society increase the awareness of dementia. We are thrilled John has shown his support and we are positive it will help this year's event to be even more successful."

Memory Walk is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes.
