Essex: Funding To Tackle Obesity

An eating disorder charity, that helps people in Essex, has been given £300,000 to help tackle obesity.

The money has come from the Government as part of £5.4 million funding to 13 local health and care programmes around the country.

It will be spread over three years for the charities new help and support groups.

Beat says it will also build on its network of 125 groups across the UK already providing support to those suffering from an eating disorder and their families.

Susan Ringwood, Chief Executive of Beat, said: "We are delighted that the Department of Health has awarded Beat this HSCVF national grant.

"We are pleased that the government is recognising and supporting the link between emotional support and obesity as we know that providing emotional support is essential for anyone to make lasting changes to their weight.

"Our many years of experience in providing this support have proved that the inspiration and encouragement of others who have already overcome their difficulties is vital."

She added that, while obesity is not an eating disorder, people suffering from it can experience the same issues as those with other disorders: "A significant number of people who have become overweight may have done so because of emotional issues that haven't been dealt with.

"Or having become overweight for whatever reason, they may be depressed or socially isolated."

Ms Ringwood also explained the groups would be open and run by trained volunteers who have overcome the same difficulties themselves.
