Essex: Meeting Over 'Dangerous' A120 Junctions

The leader of Tendring District Council says it is only a matter of time before someone is killed on a stretch of the A120 unless something is done to make it safer.

A meeting is taking place this afternoon to discuss the Hare Green and Pellens Corner junctions, involving local councillors, the local MP and the Highways Agency.

It comes after a number of serious crashes there despite the road having already been reduced from a dual carriageway to a single on in a bid to get cars to go slower.

Peter Halliday wants roundabouts put in at both junctions or, in the meantime, temporary traffic lights.

He said: "The information I have is that there have been 3 deaths on that stretch of road since 2006 and there could easily have been more.

"We cannot wait to see if anyone else dies there before further action is taken and we have called for temporary traffic lights at both dangerous junctions.

"The changes that were made last year are obviously not working as there have been a whole string of accidents since.

"We need that stretch of the A120 to be made safer while the authorities involved sort out a permanent solution to this issue - which could well be debated in the House of Commons if Bernard Jenkin MP is successful."

Councillor Halliday added that while most of the accidents have happened at Hare Green he feels that both junctions are equally dangerous.

He said: "Of particular concern is the waiting point within the central reservation where a driver's vision is restricted and this leads to people pulling out without being aware of the traffic approaching".
