Goldhanger: Lorry Driver Jailed Over Fatal Crash

A lorry driver has been jailed for four years for causing a fatal crash near Maldon after smoking cannabis.

59 year-old Robert Bernard from Heybridge died after his car collided with the lorry on Maldon Road in Goldhanger on September 9, 2011.

34 year-old Zahid Mohamad was arrested. He was then found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and being in possession of a Class B drug after a seven-day trial in April.

Senior Investigating Officer, Insp Keith Whiting, said: "The court has seen that Zahid Mohammad had consumed cannabis while at work, probably during his journey to Tollesbury.

"Robert Bernard, who was driving home from work safely, was killed by Zahid Mohammad's goods vehicle which drifted over the centre of the road while he negotiated a left-hand bend; facts that Zahid Mohammad denied throughout the investigation.

"It appears to be a common misconception that people can consume cannabis and still drive safely. The court has seen that driving is dangerously affected for many hours after the pleasurable affects have worn off.

"I hope people take notice of this crash, realise a person of previous good character can be responsible for killing an innocent member of the public and face a substantial prison sentence. "Our thoughts remain with Robert's friends and family. I would like to acknowledge the detailed investigation completed by constables Bob Colbert and Duncan

"Thurlwell as well as the officers who attended the collision scene as without their tenacity this offence may not have been proven."

The 34-year-old former driver from Skelton Road in Upton Park was also disqualified from driving for three years and must pass an extended driving test if he wishes to have his licence returned.
