Hylands Park will be the overnight venue when the 2012 Olympic torch comes to Essex next year.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out as it arrives in Chelmsford on July 6 2012 as it tours the UK ahead of the London Games.

Celebrations will take place in the town throughout the day with a finale event put together by local artists and groups.

8,000 people will get to carry the torch on its journey around the country.

Councillor Ray Ride from Chelmsford Borough Council, said: "I am very, very proud that our hard work has come to fruition and we will be welcoming the Olympic Torch convoy through Chelmsford just three weeks before the Games are due to start.

"I'm sure we will see a huge public turnout as the community comes together to celebrate the start of the Games and witness the passage of the torch first hand. It will ignite a spark to light up the occasion!"
