Travellers were being warned of lengthy delays on train services between Chelmsford and Colchester after a bridge started to crumble.

Emergency engineering work was underway on the bridge between Witham and Hatfield Peverel and replacement bus services were running on  between Colchester and Chelmsford.

Customers were being advised to avoid travelling between Chelmsford and Colchester.

Abellio Greater Anglia tweeted: "We have major damage to a bridge at #Witham meaning no services between Chelmsford/Colchester.

"We advise not to travel.

"Disruption expected to continue until the end of service today"

Tickets were being accepted on East Midland and Great Northern services.

One line re-opened between Chelmsford and Witham just before 2pm on Sunday but disruption was expected until the end of the day.

Services between Norwich and London Liverpool Street were only running as far as Colchester.
