A man has been left with serious burns after he was set on fire in Waltham Abbey.

The 31 year-old was walking through Waltham Abbey Gardens just before 8am yesterday (Saturday, 30 July) when he was approached by a group of men.

Police say he had an "unidentified substance thrown over him" which was then ignited.

The victim was taken to hospital and is being treated for serious burns.

DI Jim Adams is leading the investigation. He said: "This is a fast moving investigation and the motive for this assault has not yet been established.

"We are making extensive enquiries in the area to find out exactly where and why this assault happened.

"The suspects are described as being of Turkish appearance.

"I would urge any witnesses to the incident or anybody who noticed any suspicious activity in the area around the time to contact my team as soon as possible".
