New children's burns unit opens in Essex

A new burns unit dedicated to children's been officially opened in Chelmsford.

Ex-footballer Jamie Redknapp, his wife Louise and Jamie's dad Harry were at Broomfield Hospital to open the new £1.7m children's burns unit.

The celebrity couple are the patrons of the Burned Children's Club - a charity supporting young burn survivors ad their families.

After planning started in 2008, the 8-bedded unit means children can now be treated on a separate ward - Until now they had to be treated alongside adults.

The new unit has a dedicated team of specialist burns nurses, nursery nurses and play support staff to care and look after the children.
