Ongar: Man Jailed for 23 Years For Farm Murder

A man from Ongar must serve a minimum of 23 years in prison for murdering another man on a farm in the town.

Billy Martindale was assaulted and killed on land off Mill Lane in Ongar last September.

A post-mortem examination showed that Mr Martindale, 39, from Cripsey Avenue, Ongar, died from head injuries which were inflicted by a pick-axe handle.

A second man, a 55-year-old from Barking, was also found at the site with head injuries. He was treated in hospital and subsequently discharged.

Paul Groves was arrested a few hours later that evening and charged with one count of murder and one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 34-year-old factory worker from Queensway, Ongar stood trial at Chelmsford Crown Court and was yesterday (Thursday May 9th) found guilty on both counts.

At Chelmsford Crown Court today (Friday) he was given a life prison sentence for the murder, with a minimum tariff of 23 years.

He was further imprisoned for 10 years for the assault, but this was to run concurrently.

Senior Investigating Officer, DI Marina Ericson, said: "There can be no excuse for the actions of Paul Groves. He is a dangerous man who showed a complete disregard for the life of Billy. Paul Groves has now been sentenced and will have many years to reflect upon the utter distress he has caused to many people."

Mr Martindale left behind his partner and their three children.

After the verdict, Tina Joseph, said: "These past few months have been quiet and we have certainly felt the loss of Billy. Our lives are empty without him as he brought character to our day.

"He had a bubbly personality and I am so angry that his dispute with Paul Groves got out of hand and left my children fatherless. I am even more angry that Billy was assaulted in front of his children and Paul Groves should be ashamed of himself for allowing this to happen. It infuriates me.

"My children and I would like to thank other members of the family, friends and neighbours who have supported or offered support throughout the past eight months. They have been invaluable.

"We miss Billy dearly and life isn't the same without him."
