Southend: Rider Jailed Over Boy Death

A man's been sentenced to more than four years in prison for killing a young boy in a road crash in Southend.

The collision happened in when six-year-old Joe Ball was struck by a motorcycle on London Road in Westcliff near to its junction with Balmoral Road shortly before 3:30pm on Monday October 10, 2011.

The boy, who lived locally, was certified dead at the scene.

Marek Kolton was arrested a short time after the crash and subsequently charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving, one count of failing to stop after a road traffic collision, one count of driving without insurance and one count of driving without a licence.

The 26-year-old unemployed man from Princes Street in Southend first appeared at Southend Magistrates Court on Thursday, October 13.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said: "This was tragic case where the defendant drove dangerously at high speed causing a young boy to lose his life. Joseph had everything to live for but his life was cut short by Mr Kolton's recklessness and total disregard for the law. Our thoughts are very much with Joseph?s family at this difficult time."
