A cyclist has been left with serious head injuries after he was knocked down while crossing the road in Colchester.

The 21 year-old student was using a pedestrian crossing on Colne Causeway at around 4.40pm on Saturday when he was knocked down.

He had crossed one line of stationary cars but was the hit by what's thought to be a silver Ford Focus or Ford Fiesta in the second lane.

The car then just drove off, heading towards the Greenstead roundabout.

Detective Inspector Scott Egerton said: "We have had a number of drivers who witnessed the collision speak to us and we know that this car was on either a 07 or 57 registration plate. We have recovered the silver wing mirror casing from the driver's side which came off during the collision.

"We believe that the car may possibly have damage to the bonnet and/or windscreen. I am appealing for the driver of this car or anyone who sees a car matching this description to contact me."
