Three people, including a baby, have been rescued after a fire broke out in a ninth floor flat in Westcliff.

Seven fire crews were called to Balmoral Road at around 11.10pm yesterday (7 May).

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters rescued two adults and a baby after a fire broke out in a ninth floor flat. The fire was extinguished by 23:54hrs.

"17 people suffered smoke inhalation as a result of this fire.

"Crews wore 12 sets of breathing apparatus and used two jets to tackle the fire. They also used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the building".
