Detectives investigating an attack in which corrosive liquid was thrown in a man's face in Essex have released shocking pictures of his injuries.
Wayne Ingold, 56, had gone to collect his post from a communal area at his block of flats when he heard two men banging on the door.
After a brief exchange, the men threw the liquid at him, inflicting severe injuries to his hands and face.
Essex Police believe the incident, which happened in Bramble Road, Witham, at about 10.45am on August 8, was a case of mistaken identity.
The photographs were taken while he was receiving hospital treatment and show burns to his face and upper body.
Detective Constable Alan Lewis said: "The photographs clearly show how Wayne suffered appalling injuries in this incident.
"He has asked us to release them to show what these people are capable of causing and how they have to be taken off the streets and brought to justice.
"It is believed that this was a case of mistaken identity and that extensive investigations have shown that there is no evidence that anyone in the area was the intended victim in this crime."
The force has released two e-fit images of men they would like to speak to about the crime.
Inquiries have been widened to London in a bid to trace them.
They drove a blue Vauxhall Signum or another hatchback vehicle.
