It has been announced the work on the controversial Tesco store in Manningtree will start in February.

Planning permission for the development on Station Road was granted back in April 2011. It was due to expire in November this year but that has now been extended until November 2015.

Carlo Guglielmi, TDC's Cabinet Member for Planning and Corporate Services, said that Tesco had asked the Council to check the situation during recent talks.

He said: "Having spoken to our legal team it is correct that under their original planning consent they had 3 years but that is now extended by one further year due to the challenge by the Co-op.

"However, we have been told that Tesco intends to start demolition work on the site in February - to avoid the worst of this winter's weather - and in preparation for the new multi-million pound scheme."
