Work to make Braintree town centre more attractive to shoppers and tourists starts today.

It will include improving its look and feel and as well as fixing footpaths and is part of a £1 million project that will see similar work in Shenfield, Billericay and Maldon.

County Councillor Eddie Johnson, Cabinet Member for Highways Maintenance and Small Scheme Delivery, said: "Our town centres have always been the powerhouses of our local economies and the Town Centre Footway Maintenance Improvement scheme will ensure that doesn't change."

Cllr Johnson continued: "We have been working closely with Braintree District Council and will be arranging work patterns to avoid the market areas of the town on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Work will also be suspended in the main shopping areas of the town throughout December."

The work in Braintree town centre is due to run from 20 October, 2014 to February 27, 2015, subject to weather conditions. This work will cease during December 2014, so as to not affect the traditional Christmas shopping season.
