Detectives, who are treating a fire at a block of flats in Dunstable as arson, are appealing for witnesses.

Firefighters called police at 4.14am on Friday (March 4) after an offender set light to a sofa and a television that was dumped in the stairwell of flats in Union Street.

Although no-one was hurt and smoke damage was confined to nearby brickwork, detectives say the incident could have been worse.

DS Terry Davis, of the Dunstable-based Serious Crime Investigation Team (SCIT) is keen to speak to anyone who saw someone hanging around the area, or has heard them bragging about the incident.

He said: “We are doing all in our power to find those responsible and would reassure residents that our Safer Neighbourhood Teams are aware. If anyone has information they think may help, we would ask them to get in touch.”
