Potton Funeral - 1000 Expected

Around 1000 people are expected to line the streets of the Bedfordshire village of Potton this afternoon for the funeral of murdered local man Jess Smith.

The 36 year-old was shot in the Cambridgeshire village of Burwell on New Year's Day.

Unless you're going to the funeral, police and local authorities are asking motorists to avoid the following roads until 4pm:

• King Street
• Market Square
• Sun Street
• Blackbird Street
• Station Road
• Sandy Road

Additionally there will be road closures at Hatley Road with its Junctions with Gamlingay Road and Sutton Road until 2.30pm approximately, there will also be significant congestion in the Sandy Road Cemetery area between approximately 2.30pm and 4pm.

Murder investigation

A 42 year-old from Burwell has been charged with murder and attempted murder and appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday (January 12). He was remanded to appear at Cambridge Crown Court.

Four other people who were arrested on Thursday (January 8) in connection with the murder on New Year’s Day have been released on police bail.

Mr Smith, 36, of Common Road, Potton, Bedfordshire, died following an incident in First Drove, Burwell, in the early hours of January 1.

A post mortem examination the following day concluded he died as a result of a gunshot wound to the back.
